What To Expect When DraftKings Sportsbook In West Virginia Finally Launches

Posted on July 3, 2019 - Last Updated on July 10, 2019

It’s a waiting game.

That is the current state of West Virginia online sports betting. Presumably, however, that will not always be the case.

The WV Lottery indicated that the launch of online sportsbooks in WV could happen by “football season.”

Considering DraftKings Sportsbook is the only online sports betting app to pass the required regulatory testing, we expect it to be the first to bring WV back online.

So, what can WV expect when it once again has a mobile option?

First of all, online betting will provide a much-needed boost to the lackluster sports betting market.

Secondly, bettors will be introduced to a sports betting app with all the bells and whistles.

What can bettors expect from DraftKings?

Formerly solely a leader in the daily fantasy industry, DraftKings is now a leader in American sports betting. The company operates in the state through a partnership with Hollywood Sportsbook.

The company’s mobile and online wagering offer ease of use and functionality. In New Jersey, a hotbed of mobile wagering, DraftKings has been continually running as the No. 2 operator.

The entire NJ sports betting market took in about $36.6 million in revenue for May. NJ does not break out revenue by operator, but estimates are that DraftKings is responsible for about 40% of all online casino revenue.

With mobile wagering back in the state, the state should see overall handle back on the rise and more revenue flowing to the state.

What devices can I use to access the app?

and Android devices should be happy as the app is available on both. In addition, bettors can also log on to the DraftKings website to place those wagers.

What types of bets are offered?

DraftKings brings a plethora of wagers to the table – the same as those found in a live sportsbook in Las Vegas or Atlantic City. Bettors may even find more options and include:

  • Straight bets
  • Parlays
  • Teasers
  • Futures
  • Prop bets

Football fans will already find some college football and NFL futures wagering as well as other prop bets and games.

Beyond traditional wagering, in-game wagering has become a popular option in recent years. DraftKings offers plenty of live-action, as well. The live betting section offers:

  • Game scores
  • Time remaining
  • Current odds
  • Totals

During live wagering, lines and odds change and are updated constantly with live betting allowed on the spread, total, and moneyline.

Beyond all these options, the operator’s betting pools also offer something different. The popular pools allow for some competitions among friends and large groups of bettors.

The pools offer fixed price point games where bettors battle against other pool members. Pick the most winners to come out on top for a nice payday.  Pool games include:

  • Pick’em
  • Brackets
  • Survivor

What’s in it for new bettors?

DraftKings offers plenty of incentives for new bettors in other states. Here’s a quick look at its bonuses in New Jersey:

  • A free $25 wager (first deposit)
  • Up to a $500 first deposit bonus

Are there regular promotions?

Along with new player bonuses, DraftKings offers regular promotions for bettors. The company should make a significant push in adding new players to its ranks.

Here are some promotions bettors can look for:

  • Daily odds boosts – Some added odds on certain big games or events. Make a bet and earn a bigger payout.
  • Parlay insurance – Make at least a four-leg parlay and earn a refund of up to $25 if only one leg misses. Bettors can use that feature up to four times daily for up a $100 refund.
  • Early cash out – This is a unique promotion, allowing bettors to cash out early to secure some winnings or cut potential losses short.

How do players deposit and cash out funds?

Making that first deposit has been fairly easy in other states. DraftKings’ deposit methods include:

  • PayPal
  • Credit/debit card
  • Bank transfer (ACH)
  • Play+ Prepaid

For those bettors hitting it big, cash out options are:

  • PayPal
  • Bank transfer
  • Check
  • Play+ Prepaid

Why is it taking so long to enter the market?

Certainly entering any new gaming jurisdiction takes time, and the company had to go through the regulatory process. However, the lottery commission recently gave the company the final okay.

An over-abundance of caution, however, caused the WV Lottery to put on the brakes.

It is making some additional demands of DraftKings to ensure compliance with the Wire Act, which applies to sports betting across state lines. The Lottery wants to ensure the entire transaction takes place within the borders fo WV.

One of the demands includes building a new wallet server in WV. A wallet server contains the financial accounting information of the customers. Originally, DraftKings intended for the server to reside in New Jersey since it doesn’t process betting data.

The building, testing, and launching a new server takes time.  And that’s the last we’ve heard from the company or the Lottery on the matter.

Will other operators be coming to WV?

That’s an open question at the moment. Major operators William Hill Sportsbook and FanDuel Sportsbook have also been approved by the lottery commission.

However, when the might enter WV isn’t known. FanDuel has partnered with The Greenbrier in the state. As a private casino, however, FanDuel’s reach is limited at the moment.

William Hill provides sports betting operations to Hollywood Sportsbook and Mountaineer Sportsbook. Beyond that, William Hill has not made its online sports betting plans public.
