The sportsbook at the Mountaineer Casino in New Cumberland, West Virginia opened the day before Thanksgiving, making it the third in the state.

William Hill is the sportsbook operator at Mountaineer Casino. It opens at 10am during the week and 9am on weekends. It is open until midnight Sunday through Thursday and 1am on weekends.

The typical sports bets are offered at Mountaineer Casino. These include straight bets, parlays, teasers, pleasers, futures and props. Sports on-the-board include football, baseball, basketball, hockey, boxing, mixed martial arts, golf, tennis and auto racing.

General Manager Bill Winkelried told WTRF that the sportsbook created 15 new jobs. He expects there to be more jobs added in the future, as well as a bump in restaurant and bar business on the property.

The Mountaineer Casino is the third to spread sports betting in West Virginia. William Hill opened the first sportsbook in the state at Hollywood Casino in September. FanDuel launched sports betting operations at The Greenbrier later in the same month.

No mobile betting in West Virginia, yet

Only live sports bets are accepted at this time in West Virginia. All wagers must be made at a window at one of the three state’s sportsbooks.

State regulators and operators hoped to have mobile betting live by Halloween. That has not yet happened. This made it difficult to generate revenue as the only sportsbook open to the public before Mountaineer Casino was Hollywood Casino. The Greenbrier is a private casino club only open to hotel guests and sporting club members.

State sports betting handle averaged $3 million a week for the first two weeks of November, according to Legal Sports Report. More than 95 percent of that handle occurred at Hollywood Casino, the only public option.

Mountaineer Casino should help state tax revenues

Mountaineer Casino should help provide a boost in revenues. This is due to its proximity to Pittsburgh and the Ohio state line. However, Pennsylvania has already started rolling out sports betting.

At this point, the big boom to sports betting in West Virginia lies in getting mobile and online options. This convenience will help draw players that do not live near a casino or do not want to bother with the inconvenience of having to go to one to place every bet.

No sportsbook at Delaware North casinos

Delaware North has yet to launch sports betting at its West Virginia casinos. The company owns Wheeling Island and Mardi Gras Casino. Delaware North partnered with Miomni, a popular betting app provider. Miomni does not provide physical sportsbooks in the United States. Currently, it is a mobile-only company.

This may be holding its launch back as West Virginia gaming regulators have yet to approve and mobile sports betting in the state, something it must do if it wants to hit its lofty tax revenue projections. The state hoped to raise $5.5 million through sports betting taxes in its first fiscal year. It is currently on pace to make $1.2 million with football season nearing a close.
