WV Sportsbooks Feature Kentucky Derby And Tour Championship This Weekend

Posted on September 4, 2020

The summer rolls on with another monster weekend at West Virginia sportsbooks.

Fans of basically every sport can find something to wager on, with the Kentucky Derby taking the top billing on Saturday.

The revamped sports schedule has thrown everything off. Typically the Kentucky Derby runs in the beginning of May, as the first leg of the Triple Crown.

However, due to the coronavirus shutting down the country, the famous horse race was moved to early September.

The Belmont Stakes ran on June 20, with New York-bred Tiz the Law coming out victorious.

The three-year-old thoroughbred is the only one eligible to go for the Triple Crown in 2020.

There are lots of other interesting markets to bet on this weekend, as well.

The PGA Tour is playing its most important tournament that isn’t a major.

The Tour Championship concludes the tour season and awards the best golfer of the year. Every player earns FedEx Cup Points each event that goes toward their final ranking.

This weekend’s tournament consists of just the top 30 players based on these standings.

While the PGA Tour will name a champ, the NHL and NBA are still working things out. Both leagues showcase pivotal second-round matchups at online sports betting apps in WV.

There is actually another online sportsbook option available this week for WV bettors.

Betly Sportsbook is now live thanks to Mardi Gras Casino and Wheeling Island. This is the two casinos’ first mobile betting app on the market since March 2019.

That isn’t all, though. Mountaineer Casino also announced that William Hill Sportsbook is now accepting bets.

Kentucky Derby Betting In WV

The Kentucky Derby is the most popular horse race every year. Casual fans will tune in from all over the country to see some of the fastest horses in the world.

Thankfully, WV horse betting customers don’t even need to go to the track to place a bet on the derby. With TVG, horse racing fans can put wagers in right from the convenience of their own homes.

The online platform even has a promotion set up for new bettors. After making an account, you’re eligible to receive a risk-free bet up to $300. TVG will credit your account if your initial win bet loses.

It also includes a special deal for the Kentucky Derby.

On select races at Churchill Downs, TVG will give you up to $10 back if your horse finishes second or third.

One major difference between the derby and the Belmont is the size of the field.

The Belmont had a total of just 10 horses, whereas this weekend’s race will include 18 competitors. This usually makes for a more thrilling race with an eventful finish.

Although there are so many more participants in the derby, the majority of them have significantly long odds of winning.

There are only three horses with odds better than 10-1 right now.

The Crown contender, Tiz the Law, has the best odds to win, but should have some solid competition right on his heels. Both Honor A.P. and Authentic will have lots of betting tickets with their names on them.

Currently, TVG features the following odds to win this weekend’s 146th running of the Kentucky Derby:

Kentucky Derby Betting Odds

  • Tiz the Law 3-5

Wagering On The Tour Championship

Another sport that is playing its season somewhat backward is the PGA Tour. Despite only having one major tournament so far this year, the Tour Champion will be announced this weekend.

Collin Morikawa took home the PGA Championship about a month ago.

While the US Open and Masters are rescheduled for the fall, this year’s Open Championship was canceled.

The somewhat shortened season has potentially even helped the sport this year. Since so many events were canceled, most of the best golfers played every week.

Usually, players will take off a few tournaments every year, especially right after a major. However, with a condensed schedule, every week has felt important with the world’s best at the top of the leaderboard.

If you’re unfamiliar with golf, then it should be noted that this weekend’s tournament is a little different than most others. It only includes the top 30 golfers based on the yearly point rankings.

The Tour Championship is being held at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia.

Since this tournament begins with pre-set scoring in place, sportsbooks take a different approach to this event. Bettors are able to wager on who just wins the tournament, but you can also take who will win the title.

Dustin Johnson enters the opening round with a score of 10-under par. This is to give him an advantage because he’s in first place in the standings.

Jon Rahm, in second place, will start the event at eight-under-par. This continues all the way throughout the 30 competitors.

Players ranked 25 through 30 start with a score of even par.

It may seem like too much of a head start for someone as good as Johnson, but it wasn’t a year ago. Rory McIlroy started at five-under in 2019 to overtake Justin Thomas’ initial lead.

At the moment, DraftKings Sportsbook lists the following odds to win Tour Championship:

Tour Championship Odds

  • Dustin Johnson +200
  • Jon Rahm +300
  • Justin Thomas +525
  • Webb Simpson +1000
  • Collin Morikawa +2300
  • Bryson Dechambeau +2500
  • Rory McIlroy +2500
  • Xander Schauffele +2500
  • Daniel Berger +3000
  • Hideki Matsuyama +3000
  • Tony Finau +5500
  • Harris English +7000
  • Patrick Reed +7000
  • Sungjae Im +8500

The NHL and NBA playoffs are heating up, too. WV sportsbooks have you covered with a variety of markets for both sports.

As the NBA heads into its second round, there are some great matchups to wager on.

In the Western Conference, the LA Clippers are taking on the Denver Nuggets. According to FanDuel Sportsbook, it has the Clippers as sizable favorites.

The online sportsbook has the Clippers with -1500 odds to advance, with the Nuggets at +790.

The West’s other series is a little bit closer. FanDuel shows the Lakers as the favorite at -520, while the Rockets have odds of +370.

The NHL postseason is approaching the conference finals.

On Friday night, the Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche will battle in a Game 7. After being down 3-1, the Avs have clawed their way back into things.

BetMGM Sportsbook has them as the favorite to complete the massive comeback. Colorado is listed at -139 right now, whereas Dallas has odds of +120.

You’re also able to wager on the total for this game. BetMGM features the line at six goals, with Over at -106 and the Under at -115.
